London Theatre Tour

May 2 – 9, 2010

$4,750 per person

Based on double occupancy. Airfare not included. First deposit due no later than December 31, 2009. Price includes accommodations, daily breakfast, all theatre performances, activities and meals mentioned in the itinerary below, and a tax-deductible donation to Delaware Theatre Company.

Day 1: Arrive in London

  • Check in to the 4-star deluxe Cavendish Hotel, situated on prestigious Jermyn Street, St James's in the center of Piccadilly & Mayfair London, and perfectly located for those seeking the thrill of London's theatres.
  • Welcome Dinner at Le Café Du Jardin, generally regarded as the most buzzing and cosmopolitan restaurant in Covent Garden.

Day 2: Setting the Stage

  • Britian Now — a morning discussion on the country you are visiting with a leading JOURNALIST or POLITICAL COMMENTATOR on major issues of the day: Government, Europe and the Euro, the international views on President Obama's first year in office, social issues, the Monarchy.
  • Performance # 1 at THE NATIONAL THEATRE, the flagship of British Theatre where the finest actors, directors and designers produce work of exceptional quality. With its three theatres, it offers an unrivalled range of classics, new plays and spectacular musicals, as well as pre-performance music, a wide range of catering, and a wonderful bookshop.

Day 3: A Trip to Stratford-upon-Avon and The Royal Shakespeare Company

  • Pre-show talk with a leading actor from the show we are about to see
  • Show # 2: A matinee performance at the RSC's new Courtyard Theatre, their temporary home during major renovations.
  • Dinner at The Kirby House, a stately home in Berkshire. Built in 1733, The Kirby House is a fine example of Queen Anne architecture and possesses all the grandeur of a large Country House with proportions that give it a friendly and informal family atmosphere. It has a fine collection of English and French furniture and paintings. Its owner, Richard Astor, is the great grandson of William Waldorf Astor, who emigrated from USA in 1891. His wife Katherine will also talk about the creation of the garden at Ground Zero to commemorate the British who died on 9/11, with which she is closely involved.

Day 4: Free day in London

Day 5: Iron, Glass and Theatre

  • A morning tour of the Cathedrals of Iron and Glass. The dazzling restoration of St. Pancras Station as the new Eurostar Terminus has re-focussed attention on London's great railway heritage and on the drama and romance of these extraordinary feats of engineering. By coach and foot we'll explore the history, architecture and engineering of four contrasting termini, finishing with a tour of St. Pancras.
  • Performance # 3: An evening performance at one of London's top theatres. Possibly the Donmar Warehouse, the Old Vic, The Royal Court, or the Almedia Theatre. Plus, a post-show discussion with a leading member of the acting company.

Day 6: Celebrity Tea

  • A lunchtime traditional tea, perhaps in The Conservatory at the Chesterfield Hotel, with a special guest from one of the plays in our program.
  • Performance # 4: An evening performance at one of London's top theatres. Possibly the Donmar Warehouse, the Old Vic, The Royal Court, or the Almedia Theatre.

Day 7: A Critic's point of view

  • A morning discussion with a leading theatre critic from The Guardian or Variety. This is a chance to bounce thoughts of what we have seen so far off of one of the leading reviewers of British theatre in the UK.
  • Performance # 5: An evening performance of one of the biggest musicals playing on London's West End.
  • Farewell Drinks!

Day 8: Fly back to the U.S. or continue your vacation! It's up to you!
