JOB OPENINGS
Principal Auditions for CROWNS
Tuesday, February 7, 2012
Delaware Theatre Company seeks African American Actors / Singers, 6 Female, 1 Male for its production of CROWNS, directed and choreographed by Kevin Ramsey.
First rehearsal March 20, 2012; first preview April 11; Opening April 14; Closes april 29, 2012.
Roles are not understudied. Performances include student matinees.
The Story: The ladies in CROWNS come in all shapes and sizes. A company of three generations of African American women with “hattitude” will form the ensemble of CROWNS. All actresses must be experienced in harmony and gospel singing and must be able to move well.
YOLANDA (20s, African American) (must be able to appear 15-18). Sassy but introverted, Yolanda keeps her feelings inside, except when she raps. Keenly observant, intelligent but reticent, her evolution to fully express herself is at the core of this story. Ultimately, must be charming, winning and exuberant. Dancing/Rapping a plus.
MOTHER SHAW (50s-60s, African American) (African counter part: Obatala- Orisha of wisdom-creativity). The well-spring of the family and the elder who holds wisdom and compassion as her legacy. Deeply spiritual. Needs to be a singer with emotional and vocal range from belt to legit.
VELMA (30-50, African American) (African counter part : Oya – Orisha of storms – purple). Flashy and has a past, Velma now expresses herself in her vivid stories and glittery hats. Knows how to have fun.
MABEL (50s, African American) (African counter part: Shango – Orisha of fire). The most conservative. Married a minister and always did the right thing. Has a genuine insight into human condition, but likes ladies to be ladies. She has a behavior code and believes in it – and you better believe in it too!
JEANETTE (30s, African American) (African counter part: Yemaya – Orisha of seas) She’s been a working girl a long time – cosmetics counter at the local department store. Prides herself on her appearance – and the ability of a hat to create mystery, flirtation, whatever the mode calls for. She’s a mother, wife and woman who really loves her hats.
WANDA (30s, African American) (African counter part: Oshun – Orisha of the river and water) Can be extroverted or introverted – changing like the river winds. Spunky. Always wants the last word.
MAN (30-50s, African American) (African counter part: Elegba - Orisha of the crossroads) Baritone/Tenor. Plays all the male roles in the play: Father, Reverend, beaus of the women, and others as cast. Versatile actor with a big soulful baritone/tenor voice. Good sense of humor. Must be able to move well – dance experience welcome.
